Two scholarships set up by the former Southland Community Arts Council are now administered by the Invercargill City Council.

The Alex Lindsay Memorial Scholarship and the O'Byrne/Jones Memorial Scholarship help string and piano players to advance their studies.

2011 O’Byrne/Jones Memorial Scholarships for 2011

Te Anau musicians Blake Kemper and Michael Sinclair have received the O’Byrne/Jones Memorial Scholarships for 2011.

“The scholarships are available to students of the piano wishing to pursue advanced studies," Invercargill City Council Community Development Manager Mary Napper said. “Blake and Michael plan to use the scholarships to further their musical studies at the University of Otago.”

The O’Byrne/Jones Memorial Scholarship was established to recognise the work of May Jones, nee O’Byrne, who was a piano teacher in Invercargill for 76 years. Recipients of the scholarships receive $1000 towards their studies.

2010 Alex Lindsay Memorial Scholarship

Patrick Wilkes, a violinist in his final year at Verdon College, is the recipient of the 2010 Alex Lindsay Memorial Scholarship.

Ms Napper said the scholarship would enable Patrick to further his music studies at the University of Otago. The $1000 scholarship is awarded to players of the violin or other orchestral instruments and is to be used to pursue advanced studies.
