Bluff wind farm proposal

Public submissions are open on a proposal by Flat Hill Wind Farm Ltd to construct an 8-turbine wind farm in the vicinity of Flat Hill, north-west of Bluff.

The applicants wish to build a wind farm on two properties: a 477ha Greenhills deer farm property and a 23ha adjoining property. The proposal is for up to 8 turbines with a maximum total capacity of 6.8MW. Flat Hill Wind Farm will generate sufficient electricity to power the equivalent of 3,000 homes.

The wind farm will connect directly into PowerNet Limited's 33 kV distribution line. The applicants say the proposed wind farm will be different to other "typical" wind farms operating and being constructed in New Zealand because:

  • It will be significantly smaller than most wind farms constructed and proposed to be constructed in New Zealand.
  • It will provide "distributed generation" rather than Transpower "grid integrated" generation. Distributed generation projects occur when the electricity produced is fed into a region‟ local power lines and the electricity is consumed locally.

Apart from the ICC website (see below), the application, images, environmental impact assessment and appendices can be viewed, and submission forms obtained from:

  • Civic Administration Building, 101 Esk Street
  • Invercargill City Library, 50 Dee Street, Invercargill.
  • Bluff Service Centre, 94-98 Gore Street.
