Animal control

Controlling animals and exterminating pests and vermin on Council-owned land, in public places and in our parks and reserves is the responsibility of Environmental Health staff, and the Parks and Reserves team.

The Environmental Health Division is also responsible for enforcing the Dog Control Act 1996 which includes dog registration, impounding and complaint investigation, education of the public and dog owners and enforcement of law and bylaws relating to dogs.

NOTE: All dog licence payments received after August 13, 2010 will be subject to a 25% penalty 

The Council also investigates nuisance and health and safety complaints such as stray animals, dogs kept for illegal fighting purposes, mistreatment of animals, and pests and vermin in food premises (flies, rats and mice etc). Food premises are also inspected to ensure they meet the the Council's standards.

The Queens Park animal reserve and aviary have been designed to enable children to view the animals and birds in safety.
