Artists, honours and plaques: there are three categories of Council awards.

Civic Theatre Artists' Court Performing Art Awards

Every three years Invercargill residents are asked to nominate local performers who have achieved prominence in the performing arts (dance, drama, film, music, radio, singing, television) for inclusion in the Artists' Corner at the Civic Theatre.

Among previous winners:
2004: Dave Kennedy, Chris Knox, Michael Parmenter, Rodney Sutton and Deborah Wai Kapohe.
2007: Jimmy Hill and Peter Skerrett.

Civic Honours Awards for Community Service

The triennial Civic Honours Awards recognise meritorious voluntary service of Invercargill citizens in one or more of the following categories: recreation, youth activities, social welfare, educational services, cultural services, religious affairs, community affairs. Candidates must be nomiated by two Invercargill citizens. Recipients of the Civic Honours Awards for Community Service are presented with a certificate and a silver civic award pin.

Recent winners include netball stalwart Monica Burns, historian and educator Lloyd Esler and William Maginn for his dedicated welfare work for the Invercargill Returned Services Association.

Civic Plaques

The Council presents Civic Plaques in appreciation for restoration, new development and promotion - and to recognise quality development in the City Centre and heritage areas.

The Council also administers other types of funding
