Top 10 job application tips

The tips here will help to ensure we receive the information we need to assess your application.

  • 1. Read the Job Description before you apply for a vacancy. This will tell you the key requirements of the role, and help you to decide if this position is for you. Job Descriptions are available for all roles.
  • 2. Make sure you include a cover letter with your application. This is an important part of our application process, and allows you to introduce yourself and demonstrate how you are best suited to the position.
  • 3. Be specific. Use your cover letter to link your own experience to the job specification. Short examples are a great way to do this. For instance, instead of saying “I possess superior time management skills" expand on this with “My superior time management skills are demonstrated by…” followed with appropriate examples from your experience. Try and keep this to one page.
  • 4. One size does not fit all. Tailor your CV to the position you are applying for. It is not necessary to list all work experience if it is not relevant to the vacancy.
  • 5. Your CV should be brief but informative. Employers don’t want long CVs - but we still want to know about you and what you have done that makes you the best person for the job. Generally two to three pages is a good guideline. In this you should list your key responsibilities and key achievements in your past positions. We are looking to see what value you would bring from your previous employment.
  • 6. If applying online make sure you use a common file type for your CV and cover letter such as MS Word (.doc) or Adobe Acrobat (.pdf).
  • 7. Use a font that is clear and easy to read. We recommend using either Arial size 11, or Times New Roman size 12.
  • 8. Always check your CV and cover Letter for spelling and grammatical errors. Applications with mistakes look sloppy and unprofessional. It might be useful to get someone else to look over your application before you send it to us.
  • 9. Make sure you can be reached easily at the contact details you provide. If you have voicemail, regularly check your messages when applying for jobs.
  • 10. Make sure your application is in on time. Late applications will generally not be considered.
