Waste management The Council has social, economic, health, environmental and legislative obligations with respect to waste management. Specific examples include: Weekly business and household refuse and kerbside recycling collections; opeation of the Council's Invercargill and Bluff transfer stations; transfer of waste to the regions landfill site; guidance for disposing of hazardous substances, car bodies and special waste; educating the public about reusing and reducing waste; and recycling of materials.
What you need to know Kerbside Recycling 1. Make sure your crate is at the kerb by 7:30am on collection day. Do not put your crate out overnight as the crate becomes a target for theft and vandalism. 2. Your crate goes out alongside your wheelie but they will be emptied at different times. 3. Ensure there is a 1m gap between your crate and wheelie bin. 4. Make sure your crate is more than half-full before you put it out for collection: this makes collection of recycling more efficient. 5. Keep your recyclables clean and flatten whatever you can. 6. Your recycle crate is your responsibility. Make sure you retrieve it from the kerb as soon as possible once it is empty.7. Write your full street address on your crate. This helps us return your crate should it go missing. Refuse Wheelie Bin 1. Make sure your bin is out at the kerb by 7:30am on collection day. Do not put your bin out overnight as the bin becomes a target for theft and vandalism 2. Ensure that there is a 1m gap between your wheelie bin and any obstacle eg recycle crate, trees, power poles, parked cars, other wheelie bins. 3. Ensure the lid of your bin is fully closed. The Council will not guarantee that your bin will be emptied if the lid is partially or fully open. 4. Ensure your rubbish is not too tightly packed. Rubbish can become jammed in the bin when too tightly packed, if this is the case you run the risk of your bin not being properly emptied. 5. The wheelie bin is your responsibility. Make sure you retrieve it from the kerb as soon as possible once it is emptied. For more information download the WasteWise brochure (link below).

Southland waste managementThe local councils (Environment Southland, Gore District Council, Invercargill City Council and Southland District Council) have agreed to work co-oporatively on waste management for the mutual benefit of all ratepayers. To learn more visit the WasteNet website.
What can you reuse, recycle or bin? This directory tells you how best to dispose of different types of waste materials i.e. batteries, paint, books, shrink wrap, concrete, gas cylinders, car bodies, fridges etc. The directory is like a phone book, it lists materials and then advises what local reuse, recycling and disposal options are available for each and gives contact/location details. Hard copies of the directory are available from your local council office.
