Local parks leader celebrated at national awards
Invercargill City Council Senior Open Spaces Planner Cassandra Horton, who was named Parks Leader of the Year at the 2026 Recreation Aotearoa Parks Awards.
A local leader helping shape the future of Invercargill’s public spaces has been recognised at the 2026 Recreation Aotearoa Parks Awards.
Invercargill City Council Senior Open Spaces Planner Cassandra Horton was named Parks Leader of the Year at the awards ceremony in Hamilton last Thursday.
Invercargill City Council Manager Parks and Recreation Caroline Rain said the win was a reflection of Horton’s dedication to making Invercargill’s public spaces some of the best in the country.
“When we’re out visiting the open spaces in our city, we don’t often think about all the work that goes into planning and creating them for the community,” she said.
“Our parks are shaped by deliberate effort and care. Cassie’s efforts continue to play a key part in ensuring they are thoughtfully designed, inclusive spaces for everyone to enjoy now and in the future.”
Horton was also recognised for her wider contribution to the sector through mentoring emerging professionals and strengthening regional connections across the recreation industry.
“Whether it’s leading a team of staff, collaborating with local communities, or untangling the tricky issues in a reserve management plan or policy, Cassie is always right there championing positive initiatives in our city,” Rain said.
“We’re really proud to have her on our team and to see her work recognised at the national level.”
The Parks Leader of the Year award, presented by Recreation Aotearoa, recognises an individual who demonstrates exceptional leadership in the management, sustainability and development of public parks in New Zealand.
