Splash Palace is calling on local tamariki to share why their sports team deserves to win a poolside party with the SBS Bank Southland Sharks.
The popular Splash Palace sports competition has returned for its third year, offering one lucky team the chance to win a meet-and-greet session with players from the Sharks and a catered party at the pool.
Invercargill City Council Manager Aquatic Services Stephen Cook said the competition had continued to grow in popularity, with entries from more than 50 teams received last year.
“This has quickly become one of our favourite community initiatives,” he said.
“We’ve seen how much it means to the teams, their whānau and supporters. The pride and excitement from past winners show just how special this experience is for our young people.”
The winners in previous years were the Queens Park AFC Jets basketball team and the Star Rugby Club Rutledge Electrical Year 5 team, highlighting the wide range of sports represented in the entries.
“Southlanders love their sport. This competition is a great way for Splash Palace to nurture that passion and encourage our young athletes to stay active and engaged in their chosen sport, whatever that may be,” Cook said.
“We’re looking forward to hearing what makes each team unique and recognising the effort they put into training and playing week after week.”
Each entry would need to include the team’s contact details and an explanation of why they deserved to win.
Cook said he was thrilled to have such high-calibre athletes involved in the competition for another year.
“Many of our top athletes, including players from the Sharks, Steel and Stags, use our pool as part of their regular training,” he said.
“We’re really lucky to have players from the Sharks giving up their time to visit Splash Palace in a different capacity, as ambassadors and champions for grassroots sport in Southland.”
Competition entries were open until 5pm on Sunday 7 June and could be submitted in person at Splash Palace, on Facebook or via the Splash Palace website.
