About Bluff

Bluff has plenty of claims to fame.

It's one of New Zealand's oldest European settlements, home to the iconic Stirling Point signpost, and world-famous for its delicious Bluff oysters.

Steeped in history and culture, and rich in rugged scenery, Bluff is a proud and tight-knit community of about 1800 residents, with deep-rooted connections to the land and sea. Located just 30 kilometres to the south of Invercargill, Motupōhue is a place where rich Māori heritage meets maritime history, resilient community spirit, and rugged coastline. The town holds deep cultural significance to Awarua Rūnaka and Ngāi Tahu.

The gateway to Te Ara a Kiwa (Foveaux Strait) and Stewart Island/Rakiura, Bluff also plays a crucial role in Southland's economy thanks to its busy deep-water port, strong ties to the maritime industry, and ongoing developments in areas ranging from aquaculture to renewable energy.

Bluff has recently expanded its recreational offerings, thanks to developments such as the new Motupōhue Adventure Park. The park features more than 10 kilometres of walking and mountain biking trails that traverse Bluff Hill. This latest addition is complemented by an upgraded Bluff boat ramp that includes modern floating pontoons.

As part of the Invercargill City Council district, Bluff is supported by services and facilities from infrastructure to planning and community initiatives.

Each year, students hailing from Bluff have the opportunity to apply for the Bluff Community Board Bursary to assist them with their studies.
