New online building consent system to be introduced

Invercargill City Council is moving to a new online building consent system on 14 September, giving customers a simpler way to apply, track and manage their applications.

Objective Build will replace Council’s current online application platform, Simpli, and has been developed following engagement with more than 100 builders, architects, designers and other industry professionals across New Zealand to ensure it meets the needs of people who regularly work through the consenting process.

Invercargill City Council Consenting and Applications Manager Gillian Cavanagh said the move was an important step in improving the customer experience.

“Applying for a building consent can be a complex process, so making it easier for customers to submit information, track their application and respond to requests is important,” Cavanagh said.

“Objective Build will provide a more modern and consistent online experience and will give our customers greater visibility of their applications.”

Applications that are already being processed through Simpli would continue through the existing consenting process, with Council to provide further information to affected customers about any actions required during the transition, Cavanagh said.

Customers planning to submit a new building consent application in the week prior to go-live were encouraged, where possible, to wait until Objective Build was live on 14 September.

“We appreciate there will be a period of adjustment as we move to the new system. Our focus is on making the transition as smooth as possible and ensuring customers and industry have the information they need to continue progressing their building projects,” Cavanagh said.
