The Ministry of Primary Industries (MPI) had introduced a Food Business Levy for registered food businesses under the Food Act 2014.
The Food Business Levy comes into effect from 1 July 2025 and will be charged per site for businesses operating under a Food Control Plan (FCP) or per registered business for those which operate under a National Programme.
This levy will pay for additional support from MPI including:
- additional education and support for businesses to meet food safety requirements
- increased monitoring to ensure the food system is working well for all New Zealanders, together with assisting businesses to proactively identify and manage any systemic issues
- enabling a fair, consistent and risk-appropriate level of verification, registry, and enforcement services for businesses
- coordinated national campaigns to tackle systemic compliance issues
- more effective, efficient and up-to-date rules and standards, developed with business input and tailored to specific needs.
