Roadside grazing
Our local rural road network includes all the land between property boundaries, the grass verge, and the road shoulder, which together form a ‘road corridor’. However, maintaining roadside boundaries on state highways within our district is managed by the NZ Transport Agency.
If you need to temporarily fence the roadside reserve area, you need to use the appropriate materials that are flexible or breakable, such as electric fence standards (pigtails) or the plastic equivalent.
Don’t use more permanent materials (such as steel waratahs), as they aren’t suitable. They pose a high risk to people inside cars if a vehicle runs off the road into your temporary fence.
If you want to graze stock on the Council Road verge, then you will need to apply for a permit. To apply for a permit, please complete the form below and email it to corridormanager@icc.govt.nz
Please note: the permit will expire after 12 months. To renew your permit, please contact us at least 5 working days before the expiry date.
