National election signs

The nationwide General Election will be held on 7 November 2026. The public will elect Members of Parliament (MPs) to determine who will be in Government.

Registered voters in our community can choose who they wish to represent the Invercargill Electorate. You also have a party vote, where you can have your say on which political party best represents you.

From 4 September 2026, all candidates and parties standing in the General Election are able to erect their signs (also known as hoardings) in our city.

Advertising is allowed on paid/hired signs with an existing resource consent, including on billboards throughout the city. These signs are not covered by the placement rules in the resource consent rules set out below, but they are still subject to the general rules of election advertising.

General rules for election advertising

All advertising must contain the Authorisation statement and contact details of the candidate. Please note, these are no longer required to be a physical address.

All advertising remains subject to the general standards of advertising.

Time frames

Signs can be erected from 2 September 2026 and must be removed by 11.59pm on 6 November 2026 (before Election Day, on 7 November).

Prohibition on signs

No signs are allowed to be placed on any Council owned land – this includes parks and reserves.

Intersection and signs

There are strict rules on the placement signs at intersections. The diagram below shows how our Roading team interpret this:

The shaded area means no signs can be erected. Please note the top of the T-intersection, which shows no signs can be placed there.

Size-No Illumination-Land owner approval

Signs must not be bigger than three (3) square meters and cannot be illuminated. You must have the approver of the landowner’s approval to place a sign on their property. Officers can request to see this if there is a complaint.

State Highways

Written approval from Waka Kotahi/NZTA is required when you plan to place a sign on the edge of a State Highway where the speed limit is more than 50kph. Written approval is not required where the speed limit is 50kmph or less.

Your sign can be in a paddock or property that is not part of the Waka Kotahi/NZTA road or verge (so facing the road but not on the road reserve). You still require permission of the land owner.

Trailer Signs

Trailers signs require a permit from our Roading team. Please complete this form and email it to: corridormanager@icc.govt.nz

Non-complying signs will be removed

Signs that do not comply with these rules will be removed by Council officers.
