As part of our commitment to remaining open and accountable, we proactively release information and documents that are of interest to the public.

Council receives a number of LGOIMA requests every year. There are some requests that hold a public interest aspect, this means that it can be appropriate to publish the information we release. It will be on a case-by-case basis, and all identifying information for the requester would be removed.

Datagrid development

Please find below information held by Invercargill City Council, relating to the Datagrid development at Makarewa.

Please note the Datagrid development is not located within the Invercargill district boundary.

However, resource consent for the laying of underground cable at Ōreti Beach has been sought and obtained from Invercargill City Council.

Resource consent for the commercial taking of water from the Ōreti River, associated with the Datagrid development, was sought and obtained by regional authority Environment Southland. Invercargill City Council has documents relating to this due to our interest in the Ōreti River.

Some details have been redacted to protect personal privacy, commercial sensitivity, and avoid the duplication of documentation held by Council.

Sir Tim Shadbolt funeral costs

Sir Tim Shadbolt was Invercargill’s longest-serving Mayor, having served nine terms (between between 1993 and 1995, and again between 1998 and 2022) in the role.

Sir Tim, who was awarded the Knight Companion of New Zealand Order of Merit in the 2019 New Year’s Honours List, passed away on the morning of Thursday, 8 January, at the age of 78. A public funeral service for Sir Tim was held at Invercargill’s Civic Theatre, on Friday, 16 January.

Following his passing, Invercargill City Council received a request from representatives of Sir Tim’s family regarding the availability of a venue suitable for the funeral service. In recognition of Sir Tim’s longstanding service to our community, and given our organisation had resources such as an appropriate venue and staff available to, it was felt it was appropriate to offer this support.

Council funded a portion of the costs associated with the funeral, or provided services in kind, as detailed as below.

At present, the costs allocated from the Waihōpai Alliance, associated with traffic management for Sir Tim’s funeral service, are not available.

Additionally, no allocation of cost regarding Council staff involved in supporting the set-up and delivery of the service (outside of costs associated with additional hours for event production staff) has been made.
