Solid fuel burners

Please submit all applications via the Simpli portal. If you require further information or need assistance with your application, please contact Vetting or the Duty Inspector on (03) 211 1777.

Please note

You cannot install your Solid Fuel Burner prior to obtaining the building consent (building consent – Form 5 will be issued and sent via Simpli) and it should not be used until it has passed the final inspection.

Once the installation is complete you can apply for the Code Compliance Certificate – Form 6 via the Simpli portal. A final inspection will be organised if it has not been done prior.

Please ensure your invoices are paid as soon as possible, so that this does not hold up the issue of your building consent, or the code compliance certificate.

What documentation is required to be submitted with my application?

All documentation must be provided in PDF format. Please ensure plans and specifications are clear and easy to read and review.

Solid Fuel Burners

Proof of Ownership (must be issued within the previous three months)

  • Rates Notice
  • Record of title

Floorplan

  • Full plan showing each level of the dwelling with all rooms clearly labelled i.e., bedroom, kitchen, stairs
  • Location of the solid fuel burner, make and model noted
  • Wetback installations must show the location of the HWC on the floorplan
  • Smoke alarm locations noting that the smoke alarms are interconnected in accordance with NZS4514:2021 as referenced in C/AS1 part 2
  • Proximity of windows drapes/curtains to the fuel burner to maintain the minimum clearance
  • If your property contains multiple dwellings/buildings, we will require a site plan to indicate which building the solid fuel burner is proposed to be installed in

Manufacturers Specifications and Installation Instructions

  • Roof/Wall flashing information to comply with NZBC E2
  • Manufacturer’s specifications and installation instructions for make and model
  • If the fuel burner does not meet the clearance requirements of the Manufacturer’s Instructions or AS/NZS2918:2001. Provide reduction factor calculation page of AS/NZS 2918:2001 and indicate reduced clearances on floorplan for any required heat shielding

Flue and Liner

  • Manufacturers Installation Instructions – showing compliance to AS/NZ 2918:2001
  • Manufacturers Technical Information for Flue and Liner system, provide construction detail of flue penetration for skillion roof or penetration of 1 or more floors
  • Provide dimensioned drawing showing the details and location if the flue is offset
  • Chimney Ventilation

Wetback

  • Confirm if tempering valve is new or existing
  • Confirm if connected to open vented HWC to comply with NZBC G12/AS1
  • Provide Certifying Plumbers details
  • Provide drawing of wetback revolve pipe setup

Second Hand Fuel Burners

  • Statement from an approved person confirming the appliance is acceptable to install. An approved person or a member of the NZHHA – NZ Home Heating Association. Note: Fuel Burner must have a new flue system

Oil Fire and Diesel Burners

  • Location of appliance and smoke alarms shown on floorplan
  • Provide confirmation appliance tested to AS1690 Domestic Oil Fire Appliances Safe Design Code
  • Manufacturers clearances to combustibles comply
  • Test Certifier approval for appliance provided (for diesel supply above 50kPa)
  • Confirmation appliance will be installed in a ventilated space
  • Flue Installation
    • Manufacturer’s installation requirements
    • Roof/wall flashing information provided to comply with NZBC E2

Tank Installation – confirm or provide the following

  • Manufacturer’s installation requirements
  • Tank location is minimum 2.5m away from any window of any habitable room or kitchen in any building on any adjoining property
  • Tank is not less than 380mm from the boundary (refer 3.2.7 AS 1691
  • Tank is 100mm away from a combustible wall or 20mm away from non-combustible wall
  • Construction details for any bunding
  • Tank vent opening must not be within 1m from any opening into the dwelling or any window (including a fixed glazed window)
  • Details of how the tank is restrained / fixed down
  • Fuel supply line is metallic
  • Diesel Tank to be certified and be Stainless Steel

Fire Valve

  • Make and Type
  • Installation Instructions
  • Location (must be outside and compliance with manufacturer’s instructions)

Backflow Prevention Details

Please Note

If the Solid Fuel Burner does not meet the Acceptable solution of AS/NZS 2918, An Alternative solution application with the appropriate supporting documentation will be required with the Consent application. For further information please contact (03) 211 1777.

Does your Solid Fuel Burner need to be replaced?

If you live in the Invercargill airshed, the Regional Air Plan may require you to change your home heating. Any new burner being installed must comply with the National Environmental Standards for Air Quality.

Refer to the Ministry for the Environment website for a current list of burners that meet the environmental standards: Authorised wood burners list.

You can continue to use your existing non-compliant burner until the dates listed in the brochure below. To find out when your burner was installed, please contact (03) 211 1777.

What if my Solid Fuel Burner has been installed without a Building Consent?

Consentable building work that has been installed/built without a building consent may require a Certificate of Acceptance (COA). Please contact (03) 211 1777 for further information.

Approved Council installers

If you are an Council approved installer, please submit the applicable form below with your Code Compliance Certificate Form 6 application
