Responsible dog owner scheme

When you apply, we’ll look at a few things to make sure you’re set up for success as a dog owner:

• Your dog ownership history (including any complaints or incidents like wandering, barking, or rushing)
• Your dog’s microchip details
• You need to have been a registered dog owner with Invercargill City Council for at least a year and we will check if you have paid your registration fees on time.

We’ll also arrange a visit to your property to make sure it’s safe and secure for your dog. This includes:

• Fencing that properly contains your dog
• Clear access for visitors to a house door when your dog is outside

If you’re on a rural property, fencing requirements may be a bit more flexible.

If you move, let us know. We’ll organise a free property check to make sure everything still meets the requirements.

Once we’ve got everything we need, we’ll be in touch to let you know the outcome of your application.

• Applications for the next registration year close on 1 April, but you can apply at any time
• As well as the application, you must have a good understanding of the Dog Control Bylaw, Dog Control Policy, as well as the Dog Control Act 1996, including leash laws and disposal of dog waste.
• If you lose your status, there’s a two-year stand-down before you can reapply
• You don’t need to reapply every year

We’ll need to make sure your property is still suitable, as requirements can change depending on the dog.
